Barbie Cutie Reveal Doll & Accessories, Care Bears Series with Share Bear Costume & 10 Surprises Including Color Change & Mini Bear

From: Barbie

Pete's Expert Summary

My human seems to have acquired yet another object of frivolous preoccupation. From what I can gather through half-lidded observation from my sunbeam, this is a "Barbie Cutie Reveal" thing. The premise involves liberating a plastic homunculus from a fluffy purple bear costume. The primary appeal for any creature of taste would be the discarded plush suit, which looks passably soft for a nap, and perhaps the tiny secondary bear, which seems an appropriate size for batting under the heaviest piece of furniture. The rest of it—the doll, the little plastic shoes, the baffling ritual of changing its hair color with water—is a complete waste of perfectly good packaging and a distraction from my dinner schedule.

A Tale from Pete the Cat

The bathroom door was ajar, a rare and suspicious event. Drawn not by curiosity but by the sound of my human's cooing—a tone usually reserved for me—I padded silently onto the cool tile. There she was, hunched over the sink like a modern-day alchemist, performing a bizarre ritual. In one hand she held the gangly plastic doll, its long blonde hair dripping. In the other, a cup of ice water. She was dunking the doll's head repeatedly, a baffling form of water torture that produced little gasps of delight from my captor. On the counter, like the discarded crown of a dethroned king, sat the plush purple head of the "Share Bear." I sat, tail giving a slow, judgmental thump-thump-thump against the bathmat. She eventually turned, holding the doll out for my inspection. "Look, Pete! Her hair has purple streaks now!" she announced, as if this were a matter of great importance. I stared. Indeed, stripes of a different color now adorned the doll's mane. I was not impressed by the "magic"—I see water every day, it is not a mysterious force—but the sudden visual change did trigger a flicker of instinct. My eyes, built to track the slightest movement, followed the new pattern. I gave a noncommittal blink. Sensing my supreme indifference to her sorcery, she sighed and set the doll down. She gathered her things, leaving the spoils of her strange game on the counter. The doll, the tiny plastic sunglasses, the little companion bear, and the magnificent, hollow plush head. I waited until the sound of her footsteps faded before leaping gracefully onto the vanity. I nudged the cold, damp doll with my nose. Useless. I batted the mini bear, sending it skittering across the counter and onto the floor—a promising candidate for a future game of "Where Did That Go." But the true prize was the plush head. It was soft, far softer than I'd anticipated. It was hollow, a perfect little cave. I circled it once, twice, before stepping delicately inside. It cradled my form perfectly, a velvety purple throne that smelled faintly of cardboard and my human's lotion. The doll could keep her magic hair. I had claimed the kingdom's finest new bed. It was, I conceded with a deep and rumbling purr, an acceptable acquisition after all.
