Crinkly Wrappers Useful; Cards Conduct a Symphony of Light

The sanctity of my afternoon nap was shattered not by a sound, but by a scent. It was the sharp, sterile perfume of fresh ink and glossy cardstock, an odor that spoke of factories and machines, not of fields and prey. My human was hunched over the coffee table, carefully peeling open a trio of crinkly packets—one the color of a cheap bauble, one a respectable silver like the fish I prefer, and one the profound black of the abyss beneath the sofa. Out spilled dozens of flat, stiff rectangles, which my human arranged in neat rows with a reverence I found utterly misplaced. I approached with the silent, fluid grace befitting my station, my white paws making no sound on the rug. My initial investigation was, to put it mildly, disappointing. I nudged one of the cards with my nose. It depicted a man, his face contorted in a silent yell, his legs frozen in an unnatural position. There was no texture, no enticing wobble, no scent of life. It was a two-dimensional effigy, inert and soulless. I gave it a tentative pat with a single, unsheathed claw. It skittered an inch and stopped. An unsatisfying, low-yield interaction. I was about to retreat to my sunbeam in disgust, dismissing the entire affair as another human folly. But then, it happened. The afternoon sun, streaming through the large window, struck the array of cards. A sudden, brilliant flash of gold erupted from one card, splashing a shimmering, dancing patch of light onto the far wall. Another card, a silver one, cast a cooler, quicker sliver of light that darted near the ceiling. I froze, my tail giving a slow, deliberate twitch. These were not toys. They were prisms. They were instruments. The humans on them were irrelevant; the true art was in their reflective potential. With newfound purpose, I hopped onto the table, ignoring my human's surprised gasp. The humans thought they were collecting players. Fools. I was collecting light. I began my work, nudging a gold card with my paw to shift the dancing sun-spot onto a particularly intriguing shadow. I tapped a silver card, sending a flicker of light zipping over the bookshelf like a captured lightning bug. The black cards were useful, too, creating voids and sharp edges in my light-sculpture. The human thought I was fascinated by soccer. No. I was conducting a symphony of light, and these gaudy little rectangles were my orchestra. They were, against all odds, worthy.
