Pete's Expert Summary
My human has procured what appears to be a miniature, portable arena for strategic napping displacement. This AMEROUS contraption is a folding wooden square upon which two factions of small, carved wooden figures are meant to be pushed around. I appreciate the craftsmanship; the wood is smooth, far superior to the cheap plastic nonsense they usually bring home. However, its primary feature, magnetism, is a grave insult. The entire point of small, enticing objects on a flat surface is their potential for being batted into the abyss under the sofa. These pieces stubbornly cling to the board, a clear and deliberate attempt to thwart my natural instincts. While the board itself might offer a pleasantly warm napping spot, its interactive potential has been severely, and I suspect intentionally, sabotaged.

A Tale from Pete the Cat
The ritual began with a satisfying click of a well-made latch. My human unfolded the wooden slab on the low table in the sunbeam I had recently vacated, and from its hollowed-out heart, began populating the checkered fields with two silent, wooden armies. I watched from the arm of the sofa, feigning disinterest, my tail giving only a slight, contemptuous flick. Another human folly. Another object to be stared at for hours with the kind of intense, furrowed-brow concentration they usually reserve for a can that the opener is failing to conquer. For an hour, I observed the slow, ponderous dance of their pointless war. A little pawn would inch forward, only to be whisked off the board by a horse-shaped piece that moved in a bizarre, jagged path. It was all dreadfully dull. My attention was drifting toward a promising dust bunny near the bookcase when I noticed a shift in the energy. My human was stuck. His hand hovered over the board, hesitating between a tall, crowned figure—the Queen, I believe she’s called—and one of the castle-like Rooks. He was trapped. The enemy was closing in. The fool was going to sacrifice his most powerful piece for nothing. A sigh escaped my lips, a puff of weary exasperation. I could not stand by and watch such tactical incompetence. I rose, stretched languidly, and with the silent grace of a shadow, I leaped onto the table. My human froze, expecting chaos. But I am not a common brute. I walked delicately between the wooden soldiers, my tuxedo bib immaculate against the dark wood. I approached the piece he was ignoring—a Knight, nestled foolishly on the edge of the conflict. I looked at the human, then back at the Knight. Then, with a deliberate and gentle nudge of my nose, I slid the magnetic piece forward and to the side, into the perfect, undefended position to threaten his opponent's King. It landed with a soft, satisfying *thunk*. My human stared, his mouth slightly agape. He looked at the Knight's new position, his eyes widening as the strategic brilliance of the move dawned on his simple mind. He saw the fork, the check, the entire unraveling of his opponent's attack. A slow smile spread across his face. He reached out, not to move the piece back, but to give me a long, slow scratch under the chin, a gesture of profound respect. He then made the move I had commanded. This board, I realized, was not a toy for batting. It was a medium, a communication device through which I could finally impart my superior intellect. The two extra Queens included were not spares; they were reinforcements, waiting for my command. This AMEROUS set was, against all odds, worthy.
