Pete's Expert Summary

My human has presented me with what appears to be a miniature, plastic version of their own species, which they call a "baby doll." It's an 11-inch, soft-bodied creature with a vinyl head and an unnervingly placid expression. Apparently, it's designed for their clumsy, small offspring and is lauded for being "washable" and "unscented"—two qualities I find highly suspect. An unscented object is an untrustworthy object. While it has no small, swallowable parts, which shows a modicum of intelligence on the manufacturer's part, it also has no feathers, no crinkle sounds, and no erratic movement. Its primary appeal seems to be a small, removable blanket, which might have some potential as a napping accessory. The doll itself, however, looks like a catastrophic waste of perfectly good sunbeam space.

A Tale from Pete the Cat

The day the golem arrived began like any other. I was meticulously grooming my white ascot when the human returned from an outing, carrying a box. From within, she produced a small, silent homunculus wrapped in a shockingly pink blanket. She set it on the living room rug, a sacrificial offering to a god I did not recognize. It was, I deduced, a creature of pure artifice. Its skin had the faint, sterile smell of a new cat carrier, and its eyes, painted a flat, synthetic blue, stared into the middle distance with a vacuity I found both insulting and deeply unsettling. This was not a toy. This was a silent judgment. I began my reconnaissance from beneath the coffee table, my tail a metronome of pure skepticism. The human chattered at it, calling it "La Baby," a name as nonsensical as the creature itself. I crept forward, a gray shadow against the hardwood, my paws making no sound. I extended a single, cautious claw and tapped its soft vinyl foot. Nothing. No squeak, no retreat, no frantic scurrying. It simply yielded to my touch with a dull, lifeless compliance. This was an entity with no survival instinct whatsoever, a profound flaw in its design. It was an insult to the very concept of prey. My investigation led me to its sole redeeming feature: the blanket. It was a flimsy piece of fleece, but undeniably soft. With a surgeon's precision, I hooked a claw into the fabric and began to tug. The golem, being an inanimate lump, put up no resistance. I liberated the blanket and dragged my prize to my preferred napping cushion. The doll, now denuded and exposed, looked even more pathetic. I gave it a final, dismissive glance. It was useless. An empty vessel. Later that evening, from my new, slightly-more-comfortable throne, I watched as the human gently placed the doll on the bookshelf. Its unblinking gaze now surveyed my kingdom from above. Let it watch. I have its blanket. I have asserted my dominance. The doll is a hollow victory for the humans, a placeholder for their affections. But I am the one who sleeps upon the spoils of war. It is not worthy of my attention, but its accessories are, at least for now, adequate.
