Glow-Pajama Doll Earns a Stay of Execution

Our critic steals the pacifier, evicts the star teether, and claims the blanket, but grants the softly glowing doll a reprieve after its eerie nocturnal pajama display proves diverting.

So, my Human has presented me with this... thing. It appears to be a small, plastic imitation of their own species, a "Baby Alive" doll, apparently designed for a "sleepover." Honestly, every moment is a sleepover for a cat of my distinction, so the theme is rather redundant. It comes with a few trinkets: a bottle, a pacifier, and a blanket. The bottle is a potential source of spilt water, which is always a welcome refreshment, and the pacifier and star-shaped teether seem perfectly sized for batting into the dark, unreachable void under the couch. The doll itself is mostly a stationary lump, though I'm told its eyes close, which might be startling enough to be entertaining for a second or two. The glow-in-the-dark pajamas are a mild curiosity for my nightly patrols. Ultimately, the accessories show promise, but the main doll seems like another piece of clutter destined to occupy a prime sunbeam spot.

The Human placed the box on the floor, a space I generally consider an extension of my personal napping territory. From within, they extracted the offering: a small, plastic being with an unblinking stare, garish red fibers sprouting from its head, and clothed in an offensively whimsical patterned onesie. I approached with the dignified caution befitting my station, my tail giving a slow, judgmental twitch. It smelled of plastic and disappointment. This "Dottie Doodle" was an unwelcome addition to my perfectly curated environment, and I was prepared to register my complaint by pointedly ignoring it for the foreseeable future. My Human, however, is nothing if not persistent. "Look, Pete! Her eyes close!" they cooed, demonstrating by jamming a tiny bottle into the doll's face. Nothing. Then, they produced a small, plastic plug—the pacifier—and inserted it. The doll's eyelids snapped shut with an audible click. I confess, I was startled. A low, involuntary growl rumbled in my chest as I took a half-step back. The sudden "death" of the plastic creature was unsettling, yet intriguing. The Human seemed pleased with my reaction, which I immediately disguised with a theatrical yawn and a vigorous grooming of my shoulder. One must never let the staff know they have succeeded in amusing you. Once the Human was distracted by a glowing rectangle in their hand, I seized my opportunity. The dormant doll was of little interest, but the scattered accessories were a treasure trove. The star-shaped teether was the first to go, sent skittering across the hardwood with a satisfying flick of my paw until it vanished under the bookshelf. The main prize, however, was the pacifier. Its ring was perfect for hooking a claw through, and I spent a glorious minute batting it around before depositing it in my secret stash behind the drapes. I even condescended to test the miniature blanket; it was absurdly small, but just soft enough to merit resting a single, pristine white paw upon it, thus claiming it for myself. Later, as twilight faded and the house settled into its proper, quiet state, I noticed a faint, ethereal glow coming from the living room rug. It was the doll. The strange doodles on its pajamas were illuminated in the dark. It wasn't the thrill of the red dot or the frantic dance of a feather wand, but it was a novel sight. I sat for a moment, observing the softly glowing patterns. My final verdict: the doll itself is a passable obstacle, but its components are of superior playability. It has earned a temporary stay of execution. It is not entirely a waste, and perhaps, if the Human can be trained to operate the eye-closing mechanism on command, it may yet prove to be a worthy diversion.
