Lion Dethroned; Rattle Ring Earns Permanent Collection Spot

Pete challenges the lion-topped stacker's authority, demolishes the tower with a swift strike, then awards the detachable rattle ring a place in his personal collection.

My human, in their infinite and often misguided wisdom, has presented what appears to be a vertical stacking device intended for a small, uncoordinated human. It’s an assortment of rings—some hard wood for satisfying clatter, some plush for claw-sinking, and one odd, rubbery thing for… well, I shudder to think. The entire contraption is topped with the head of a lion, a distant and frankly less-pampered cousin. While the "educational" aspect is a complete waste of my superior intellect, the potential for catastrophic deconstruction is high. The promise of a detachable rattle, however, suggests this item might not be a complete waste of my valuable napping time, offering a glimmer of hope for some quality floor hockey later.

The thing arrived in a cardboard box, which was, as always, the most promising part of the entire experience. I supervised the human’s clumsy unboxing from my sunbeam, feigning sleep but with one ear swiveled in their direction. They pulled out wooden discs, soft fabric rings, and a wooden pole. My initial assessment was bleak: another stationary object destined to gather dust and my shed fur. They assembled it into a tower, a colorful affront to the minimalist décor I strive to maintain. Atop it all, they placed a small, wooden lion head, which stared at me with a vacant, superior expression. The audacity. I allowed the tower to sit for a full ten minutes, a period of observation I felt it deserved before its inevitable demise. I sauntered over, my tail giving a slow, judgmental sweep. A cursory sniff confirmed the presence of wood (good for batting), corduroy-like plush (excellent for a quick claw-sharpening), and that strange, chewy silicone ring which I immediately dismissed. The human, trying to entice me, dangled a separate ring that rattled. The sound, a crisp jingle of wooden beads, was… compelling. It spoke of midnight hunts and skittering across the hardwood. My skepticism began to thaw, but I refused to give the human the satisfaction of seeing it. With a sigh of performative boredom, I rose onto my hind legs. The lion’s smug face was level with mine. There can only be one king in this castle, I thought. I gave the plush ring a gentle tap. It wobbled. A thrill shot through my whiskers. I drew back a paw and delivered a swift, precise strike to the tower’s midsection. The rings scattered with a delightful cacophony of *clacks* and *thuds*. The lion’s head rolled ignominiously under the armchair. A job well done. Ignoring the scattered remains of the tower—the small human could learn about gravity on their own time—I located the prize. The rattle ring had landed near the rug’s edge. I pounced, batting it with a soft paw. It danced away, jingling its siren song. I chased it, a predator renewed. The verdict was in. The stacker itself is a fleeting amusement, a monument built only for me to conquer. But this little rattle? This object has earned its place in my collection. It is worthy. The human, for now, is forgiven.
