A Tale from Pete the Cat
It arrived coiled around the handle of a wheeled prison the humans use to transport the small one. A plush python, garish and smiling, had strangled the push-bar, its body spawning pathetic-looking creatures—a lion with a yarn mane, an elephant with crinkly ears. My first instinct was to hiss. This was an intruder, a gaudy stain upon the sleek, minimalist decor I work so hard to maintain simply by existing within it. The human, noticing my narrowed eyes, had the audacity to wiggle it. A tiny, tinny bell sound, like a dying firefly, tinkled from within one of the appendages. I was not impressed. I flicked my tail once, a gesture of profound dismissal, and turned to find a more suitable sunbeam. Later, under the cloak of twilight when the house was still, my curiosity, that treacherous little beast, got the better of me. I crept back to the wheeled contraption parked in the hallway. The plush serpent was silent, its cheerful expression a mockery in the dim light. I gave it a wide berth, circling it as I would a sleeping dog. On my third pass, my whiskers brushed against the elephant's ear. An instinct I could not control took over. My paw shot out, claws sheathed, and tapped it. *Crinkle-crackle-rustle.* The sound was exquisite. It spoke of hidden treats, of scurrying prey, of the crisp, delightful promise of a fresh bag of kibble. My mission changed. This was no longer an object of scorn, but a puzzle box of sound. The bell was still pathetic, but the crinkle... the crinkle was everything. I tried to detach the elephant, to carry it off to my lair beneath the armchair for a proper interrogation. But the spiral design was fiendishly clever. The elastic cord that attached the toy gave it just enough recoil to snap it back into place, just out of my grasp. It wasn't a toy to be captured; it was a game to be played right there, in enemy territory. For the next ten minutes, I was a whirlwind of focused, gray-furred fury. I batted, I pounced, I bunny-kicked the spiral itself, attempting to wrestle the crinkly ear into submission. The entire contraption rattled and shook with my efforts. I was no longer a pampered house cat; I was a mighty hunter, locked in a desperate battle with a creature of pure, unadulterated sound. I never did manage to rip the ear off. But as I sat back, panting slightly, a newfound respect settled in my chest. It was loud, it was absurd, and it was still ugly. But it had provided a worthy struggle. The verdict was in: the crinkle was of sufficient quality to grant the toy a temporary stay of execution. It could remain, for now, as my personal training device.
