So, the Human has acquired a small, offensively pink brick that is apparently designed for the small, loud humans who sometimes visit. It captures images and then, with an intriguing little whir, spits out slips of paper. It also makes other noises and has flashing lights, standard procedure for distracting the less-discerning members of a household. The primary appeal for a being of my refinement is twofold: the dangling lanyard, which has tantalizing possibilities as a string toy, and the freshly printed paper slips, which I imagine will have a satisfyingly crinkly texture perfect for batting under the sofa. The sudden flash is a potential deal-breaker, a rude interruption to a perfectly good state of vigilance, but we shall see if the paper is worth the retinal assault.

The prophecy had come true. For weeks, I had overheard the Humans murmuring about a "camera" for the "niece," and I had envisioned some ghastly, large, professional-looking thing. Instead, a Small Human arrived clutching this pink monstrosity. She was a whirlwind of giggles and clumsy movements, and I observed her from my strategic post atop the bookcase, my tail twitching in mild irritation. She pointed the device at a wilting fern, there was a *click*, and then a sound that piqued my interest—a soft, mechanical *whirrrrr*, followed by a thin, white tongue of paper sliding out from a slot in the front. My initial assessment was one of guarded curiosity. The Small Human took the paper, which now bore a ghostly image of the sad fern, and proceeded to deface it with a waxy green stick. A travesty. This paper, this new and mysterious substance, was clearly too precious for such crude treatment. A plan began to form in the tactical command center of my mind. The paper was the prize. The Small Human was the obstacle. The pink brick was the delivery mechanism. I needed to devise a method of interception. The opportunity came when the Small Human, inevitably, turned her attention to me. "Kitty! Look here, Pete!" she chirped, aiming the pink lens in my direction. I held her gaze, feigning disinterest while coiling my muscles. I saw her thumb press the button. The flash was an unpleasant surprise, a brief, white explosion in my vision, but I was a professional. The familiar *whirrrrr* began. This was my cue. I launched myself from the bookcase, a silent, grey-and-white missile of intent. I soared through the air, timing my descent perfectly with the emergence of the paper. I landed deftly on the rug, the small, rectangular slip of paper already secured gently in my mouth. The Small Human let out a gasp of surprised laughter. I paid her no mind, trotting victoriously under the coffee table with my prize. The paper depicted a blurry, startled version of my own magnificent face, the flash reflecting in my eyes like twin suns. The texture was superb, the weight perfect for pouncing. The pink brick itself is a noisy nuisance, but its output… its glorious, crinkly, perfectly bat-able output… is of the highest possible quality. An acceptable offering. Now, to shred this masterpiece before the waxy sticks can find it.
