Pete's Expert Summary
My human has presented me with a box of what they call "Alpine Serenity," which apparently consists of one thousand tiny, flat, colorful objects. Their goal is to painstakingly reassemble these pieces into a large, static picture of a mountain, an endeavor they find "relaxing." For me, the appeal is threefold. First, the box itself is a magnificent, high-sided fortress. Second, the pieces are exquisitely lightweight and skitter beautifully across a hardwood floor with a single, well-placed bat. Third, the final, enormous product—if they ever manage to finish it without my "help"—promises a new, expansive, and delightfully forbidden platform on the dining room table from which to survey my domain. The human's obsession with finding "hidden images" is a quaint, simple-minded pursuit, but it keeps them occupied.

A Tale from Pete the Cat
The rhythmic click-clack of cardboard on wood was a tedious soundtrack to my afternoon. My human, hunched over the table like some sort of bespectacled gargoyle, was deep in the throes of assembling the mountain. I watched from the plush armchair, my tail twitching in profound boredom. The scene on the box—a placid lake, stoic peaks, a sky of impossible blue—held no interest for me. It was flat, lifeless. I closed my eyes, letting the scent of printed ink and the low murmur of human frustration lull me into a slumber. I awoke not in my chair, but within a valley of giants. The grass beneath my paws was a glossy, strangely sectioned field of green. Jagged, multi-colored cliffs loomed on all sides, the very fabric of the world a tapestry of interlocking shapes. This was the puzzle, and I was in it. The air was still, silent save for a strange, distant snapping sound, as if reality itself was clicking into place. I was not my normal size; I was immense, a gray-furred titan strolling through a cardboard canyon. A flicker of movement caught my eye. Perched on a half-assembled pine tree was a bird, one of the so-called "hidden images." It wasn't a creature of feather and bone, but of pure color and clever design. It cocked its printed head. "The Sleeper has awakened," it chirped, its voice like the rustle of the poster-paper guide. "The Serenity is incomplete. The Sky-Maker is clumsy." I understood. The Sky-Maker was my human, and their fumbling attempts to piece together the heavens were disturbing the peace of this paper realm. I padded toward the base of the great mountain, a monolith of unjoined potential. I had a duty. As the true master of this house, I was also the guardian of its temporary landscapes. I leaped, my paws finding purchase on the sturdy puzzle-board, and began my ascent. I was the spirit of the mountain, the serene gray peak that anchored the entire scene. When I awoke back in my armchair, the sun had shifted. I looked at the puzzle, now a chaotic mess of blue and brown pieces. It was not just a human's toy. It was a kingdom in need of its king. With a decisive leap, I landed squarely in the middle of their work, curled into a perfect circle, and began my vigil. This serenity would be protected.
